We continue to stay at Boothaus Roll on the Zeuthern See and the weather has been very mixed. We have had glorious sunshine one day and thunderstorms and hail stones the next. We have spent the time cleaning the boat and getting ready to go home for “holidays”. Continue reading
When we started out on our Gap Year, we felt we were so privileged to have the opportunity to do this type of trip that we would give something back by having a nominated charity on our blog. For us it had to be The Society of St. Vincent de Paul. We set ourselves a target of raising €2000 and so far we have raised €440. As Germany won the World Cup last night, you can guess we are in a very happy place today! We got our T.V. out and watched it ourselves. I did not realise before we came to Berlin how many large lakes surround it. We are in a marina called Boothaus Roll on the Zeuthener See (Lake), about 30 minutes by train from Berlin and a beautiful spot. As with many of the things that have happened on this Gap Year, we are here because of people we met on the journey. In Paris we met Dr Angelika & Franz Paulus and they advised us to come here. The Mittelland Canal is fast, efficient and boring. We are pushing hard to get to our final destination – Berlin. The boat is being run like a proper ship, motoring for 8 to 9 hours and doing up to 80 km per day. Nuala and I are doing one hour on and one hour off at the helm. Continue reading
We arrived in Munster on Tuesday, intending on staying one night. We took a chance and went into the main town harbour instead of going to the local marina. While it was not an official mooring site, we saw one other boat and decided to stay. There was no electricity or water but it turned out to be an inspired decision. By that night, five other boats had joined us and the place was buzzing as the cafes and bars along the waterfront were filled with people. As I said in a previous blog it was like been in the middle of the IFSC in Dublin (for our non-Irish readers, the Financial Centre in the middle of Dublin – very up market). Continue reading

Our First Impressions of Germany
We have been in Germany nineteen days now and our first impressions are below…. After spending almost three months in France, and with Nuala having such good French, we were worried about moving to Germany. But as I reminded Nuala, the challenge of the Gap Year was to get from Paris to Berlin and we had to get out of our new comfort zone and keep going.
